The Art of Caring

In recognition of Black History Month, Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital Foundation is celebrating “The Art of Caring.” This free event is open to the public Thursday, February 24 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Auxiliary Conference Center at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. The program features a presentation by Gary Roberts and an exhibition of Roberts’ original artwork. Visitors will enjoy sampling a selection of Southern desserts made with authentic recipes from area families.

Roberts is the Director of Community Mobilization/RPT at Brown Family Health Center, Inc. He is an active health advocate, community organizer and serves on several local boards, including 21/7. He grew up in Burgess Hill and graduated from Nacogdoches High School.

Planning the event is a labor of love for Foundation Director Ella Nobles.

“We wanted to do something for Black History Month to bring the community together, because we’re better together,” Nobles said. “Mr. Roberts is a pillar of Nacogdoches. I am thrilled for people to hear more about the work he does in our community.”

Roberts specializes in drawing black and white and colored charcoal portraits. Several of his pieces are featured in a display at Angelina Center for the Arts.

“I was excited when he offered to bring some of his original pieces,” Nobles said.
